Dear Friends:

What a valiant effort you made! We needed 24,272 signatures and finally reached 22,500 at 4:00 p.m. today. Just a few thousand short. Being summer vacation time for so many probably held us back to some degree. If we had 10 more days, we would have been there easily!

The good news is that County Council District 6 went significantly over the required number of signatures to overturn the Pinnacle Ordinance. That will send a strong message to the Gaming Commission that a new casino in South County has heavy opposition from residents in the area.

As you know, most referenda are accomplished by paying professional signature gatherers to reach the necessary numbers. From the very beginning we all agreed that this would be a strictly voluntary effort. Amazingly, some of you gathered literally hundreds of signatures by working very long hours and for many days. All of the sponsoring groups are greatly indebted to you for your commitment and dedication.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?

The Gaming Commission will be considering licensing a casino in South County in September. They may in fact make a selection very soon. They could select Pinnacle which is the County Council's choice, or they could pass over them and select Isle of Capri or Harrah's. Or they could go to Barnhart in Jefferson County. Now is the time to send letters to the Commission saying NO, not in St. Louis County and not in Jefferson County.

We will make them aware of the signatures gathered in the last 40 days, as well as the overwhelming St. Louis County vote on August 3 against casino expansion, asking them for a moratorium on any new casinos, period. However, to make a strong impression, the Gaming Commission must hear from thousands of citizens. Here is your opportunity. If you need ideas for writing a letter, let us know.
